Inspired by the exquisite blue pea flowers, this 3-hour culinary and craft workshop in Pasir Ris is centered on appreciating the butterfly pea plant, or Clitoria ternatea, that is native to Asia and known for its healing properties.
Helmed by artist Carlyn Law and educator Janna Hussain, this unique workshop - was part of Singapore HeritageFest 2022 - will take participants back to the days of the kampong where they can harvest a variety of blue pea flowers from the home garden of these two neighbours who bonded over the blue pea.
While savouring their welcome blue pea drink, the participants will learn useful plant care tips and discover the cultural significance and culinary uses of this humble ingredient around the world. The cooking demo by Janna will feature two traditional dishes - Nasi lemak and Kuih dadar - with a blue pea twist in her halal kitchen whereby participants will learn how to incoporate the blue pea flowers.
They will get to taste their freshly made kuih dadar and the nasi lemak with basic condiments like sambal, ikan bilis and egg. After that, they will take part in a printmaking craft activity with Carlyn next door and carve a blue pea flower stamp to make beautiful prints on cards.
Participants will bring home blue pea seeds, 1 stamp, 1 ink pad, and 2 cards. Suitable for age 10 and above.
